7 years to prepare
9 billion people to protect
1 planet to preserve
In the year 2030, an interstellar asteroid is detected entering the outer reaches of the solar system. Its trajectory places it on a collision course with Earth in seven years’ time.
The looming threat of global extinction triggers the formation of ICERN, a collaboration of the five largest space agencies in the world. Together, they need to devise and execute a plan of action, using the latest in modern technology to redirect the asteroid.
Seven years later and the mission is fully underway, with a revolutionary global defence programme called SOLAR. This system requires a constant crew on Mars, ready to act as the first line of defence against the colossal threat.
But things never go according to plan
When the system designed to protect the Earth fails, the world erupts into chaos as the countdown for the arrival of the asteroid begins.
For Aurora, her life gets turned upside down when her family receive tickets for bunker relocation. They must try and reach Inverness, navigating through a surge of riots, looting and natural disasters brought about by the asteroid.
Meanwhile, Chidi is manically helping prepare the Inverness Bunker for the influx of new inhabitants. All he can do is stand by and watch as family after family get turned away from safety, while those chosen receive refuge.
Over 140 million miles away is Alex. Not only did the SEIA IX crew fail to change Viatrix’s path, but now they must sit and watch as the asteroid hurtles towards Earth. Preparing the backup plan for humanity, playing Martian golf and carrying on with scientific experiments does little to distract Alex from the guilt and horror she feels at not being able to help her own and the billions of other families back on Earth.
As a newly qualified research assistant at ICERN, Rav regularly works with the world-famous Dr Heike Bartal, the scientist who discovered asteroid Viatrix seven years ago. After gaining her trust, he unexpectantly finds himself at the centre of the backup plan to divert the asteroid, flying across the globe with Heike as they make plans to try and save the world, even if those in power believe it’s already too late.
